My Client-Focused Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: The client fills out my fill in the blank speech form at http://www.speechwriter.net/speech_writer's_client_response_form.HTM
This gives me the specifics of the speech (e.g.: Who, when, where , etc., and sends me any background information that might be helpful.)
Step 2: The next step is for the client and me to set up a time for a phone interview, which I will tape (for my own use only)
Step 3: I write a first outline. Depending on how comfortable and confident I feel about the presentation, sometimes this draft is an outline of a couple pages and sometimes it is a full-text, first-draft outline of the speech, which enables my client to not only comment more easily by paragraph number, but allows the client to see the logic of the speech. Usually I can provide the full-text outline on the first draft.
Step 4: When I have the client's comments on my first draft, I make the requested changes and turn the outline into a delivery format in speech font and prepare a set of slides that are obviously coordinated with the text. I can use PowerPoint's full array or charts and graphs if the client can provide data, and I have a good graphics library. I also have some cartoon graphics that I'm fond of using since it sometimes helps to liven up a presentation, unless the issue is too serious.
Step 5: I send the delivery copy and slides to the client, making any follow-on changes the client requests until we have a final. The most frequent norm is to have one draft and then a final.
Step 6. I always ask my client to give me feedback after the event. When the event is completed, I send an invoice for my hours worked on the presentation in specific activities in half-hour increments.
Here are two examples of slides I prepared for a CEO to give in at a major presentation in Korea.
